    MARK YOUR CALENDARS!!

2018 Maryland Occupational Therapy Association Advocacy Night!!

    Monday, February 26, 2018

Registration is open for occupational therapy practitioners and students to meet with Maryland legislators to discuss issues important to our profession and the people we serve!

The legislative session started on January 10th and already there have been important issues requiring input from occupational therapists. Thanks to our lobbyists, Robyn Elliott and Rachael Faulkner, we were made aware of a bill being introduced and discussed within a few days related to athletic trainers. MOTA mobilized quickly and our MOTA President, Kate Eglseder, provided testimony in opposition to the bill. Along with other health professions, we were able to participate in keeping the bill from being passed without additional discussion and cooperation between stakeholders to put forth an amended bill. This is what MOTA membership does for you - monitors and acts on possible encroachment on our scope of practice.

We can continue this advocacy during Advocacy Night, where you can educate legislators and and explain real impacts to implementing certain legislation. It is a VERY empowering event! I encourage all to register for this FREE event as soon as possible. Our lobbyists work to schedule meetings with delegates from YOUR districts so it is important to have as complete a list as we can by February 12.

The event starts at 5 pm at Harry Browne's Restaurant where light hors d'oeuvres will be served and a pre-meeting orientation will be provided to participants in preparation to meet with delegates and be an effective advocate. Meetings with delegates will start approximately at 6:30 or 7 pm. Specific details regarding location and parking will be provided closer to the event to registered participants.

You can sign-up now on this MOTA website link (http://www.mota.memberlodge.org/event-2807552) and earn 3 contact hours towards licensure renewal. Please encourage your co-workers and OT friends to register as well. If you have any questions, please contact me at: slawson@towson.edu.
