Using systematic desensitization to treat food selectivity in children with autism spectrum disorder

Food selectivity is a common feeding problem for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Empirical evidence supports using escape extinction to help with diet expansion. However, escape extinction is often associated with intense behavioral and emotional reactions. This presentation suggests benefits from using an exposure hierarchy to introduce novel foods. The presenters will discuss the feeding difficulties associated with autism and the role an interdisciplinary team plays in the treatment of food selectivity. The presenters reviewed goal achievement for children with autism and food selectivity who were admitted to a feeding day program. The presenters further examined the relationship between systematic desensitization, diet expansion, and mealtime compliance. The exposure hierarchy will be reviewed and case studies will be provided.
